The average American generates 4.6 pounds of trash PER DAY – but most Americans only recycle 1.5 lbs of such waste.
The Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) in partnership with the Allegheny County Health Department and Colcom Foundation is providing opportunities for area residents to properly dispose of a wide variety of materials at “hard to recycle” collection events scheduled in 2012.
At the upcoming events, individuals can drop off televisions, e-waste (including computers, monitors, keyboards printers and more), cell phones, printer/toner cartridges, compact fluorescent bulbs, alkaline batteries and ink and toner cartridge.
NEW THIS YEAR –PRC is returning the Hard to Recycle Collection event to its roots! This year the focus will only be on items collected for recycling (see below for a list of materials accepted). We will no longer be taking medical supplies, usable building materials, furniture, and tires at the events. Instead - PRC will be holding the ReuseFest Collection Event this year, a one day collection event that focuses on reuse materials that will be held in August of 2012! ReuseFest Collection Event details to come soon.

The 2011 Hard to Recycle Collection Events were some of the most successful since the program’s inception in 2003. This year, more than 1,500 participants helped to recycle:
PRC also partnered with some amazing local reuse-focused organizations, including Construction Junction, Global Links, Off the Floor, Planet Aid and the Pittsburgh Tote Bag Project. They collected 2,100lbs of usable building materials, more than 100 different medical supplies, 220 pounds of clothing, and over 40 tote bags at our four 2011 HTR events. Thanks to their efforts, these materials were kept out of landfills and given a second life!
We would also like to thank the following for their contributions - our sponsors the Allegheny County Health Department and the Colcom Foundation; location partners The Mall at Robinson, Pittsburgh Public Schools, Steel City Harley Davidson and the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills; partner organizations eLoop, Liberty Tire, Duquesne Light; our reuse partners listed above and all of the wonderful volunteers.
In addition to the PRC-sponsored HTR events, we also worked with the municipalities of Glassport and Green Tree to hold five e-waste events in 2011. These resulted in the collection of an additional 13.7 tons of e-waste for a 2011 grand total of 91.7 tons!
A slideshow of the 2011 HTR events is also available.
In 2010 PRC held 5 Hard to Recycle Collection Events!
During these 5 Events a total of 1680 residents safely recycled over 64 tons of e-waste, 183 propane tanks, 939 tires, hundreds of printer/toner cartridges, cell phones and CFL's, and more than 3,000 pounds of batteries!
PRC would like to thank the Allegheny County Health Department and the Colcom Foundation for their support of the 2010 Hard to Recycle Events!
