We have the expertise to help you ensure you are following best practices for waste management and identifying opportunities for cost savings and reduced environmental impact. Our fee-for-service offerings include (click the service heading to read more about the particular service):

Waste Audits
Waste audits are the first step in creating a waste diversion program: you have to know what's in your trash before you figure out the best and most cost-effective way to divert it. We can plan and execute a waste characterization study (yes, we do actually go through your garbage!) that will provide you with an understanding of the approximate volumes of waste being generated and the percentages of various materials. Recycling Program Evaluation & Design

Zero Waste Pittsburgh can assess the recycling program you have in place to ensure it is appropriate for your organization. We also provide guidance and recommendations for modifying and developing new waste diversion programs to maximize your waste diversion. This includes:

  • Selection, procurement, and location of appropriate bins
  • Design and installation of signage to inform users of how and where to deposit waste
  • Coordination of hauling services to remove recyclables from your facility
Education & Outreach

Zero Waste Pittsburgh offers numerous services to help connect with and educate your stakeholders and the general public about waste reduction. Our offerings include:

  • Training of key housekeeping personnel to ensure that your waste diversion program is not accidentally compromised
  • Workshops and presentations on the details of your waste diversion program to all personnel and stakeholders
  • In-depth workshops on issues like how to start backyard composting
  • Partnering at public events to distribute materials and answer questions
Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) Guidance

Let Zero Waste Pittsburgh help you find the correct products to complement your waste diversion program. We can help you cut through the “green washing” and confusing jargon to identify products that meet compostability standards, are made from high recycled content, use bleach- and chlorine-free processes, and more. The types of products we can direct you towards are:

  • Trash can liners
  • Plates, cups, and cutlery
  • Napkins, paper towels, and bathroom tissue
Special Event Waste Diversion Management

Zero Waste Pittsburgh pioneered waste diversion for events in the Pittsburgh region. Our unique service for special events will help you plan, implement and execute a waste management program for your event, whether it’s large or small. We can provide either:

  • Full waste management services - We will plan, set up, operate waste collection and separation, and manage pickup of the waste from your event;

OR

  • Limited services where we help you draw up the waste management plan, deliver the collection containers to you, and you handle the rest.

In either case we can provide signage directing guests and visitors where and how to place their waste, as well as help you procure appropriate service wares (compostable, recyclable, etc.). Contact us to find out more about this innovative and useful program!

Hard to Recycle Coordination
Some items aren't easily recycled (furniture, electronics, exit signs, ceiling tiles, carpet, etc) and require non-standard handling to avoid landfill. We can help coordinate and document recycling of your hard to recycle materials. We have an extensive network of material aggregators and processors that we can access to address your needs.
For those event organizers interested in recyclables and compostables collection on their own, Zero Waste Pittsburgh now offers no cost and low cost opportunities to promote recycling at their events. Rental of recycling containers, zero waste stations and signage as well as compostable serviceware is available. Contact us today to find out more!
